Focus your grant development

I keep an eye on current job postings for all grants professionals: writers, managers and evaluators. One thing I’m noticing is organizations combining the grant writer position with other functions through use of the “/” character. A sampling of the latest:

  • Grant writer/communications officer
  • Grant writer/program evaluator
  • Grant writer/newsletter editor
  • Grant writer/development director
  • Grant writer/office assistant

I understand the desire to maximize available finances and human capital. Why hire two people when one can do both? Combining a grant writer with other positions, however, is a poor long-term strategy.
