TIPS & TECHNIQUES

Is there a simple way to improve every proposal you write without a major investment of time or resources? Absolutely! The secret is the time-honored practice of proofreading. Yes, proofreading: an idea so obvious but one that not everyone utilizes. Grants are very deadline-oriented animals and, as such, most applicants spend all their time up to the deadline developing and writing their proposal, leaving no time for proofreading. Their proposals are consequently filled with misspellings (despite spell check), grammatical errors and below average prose. As a result, proposal reviewers struggle to read the applicant's work. Not good. Part of your responsibility when developing a proposal is to make you writing coherent and easy to read. So before you submit any proposals, spend at least one day proofreading and revising your work. If you budget enough time, have a fresh set of eyes read your proposal--someone outside your organization with no knowledge of your proposed program. If they can understand the points you make, chances are you will do fine during the official review.

Have you ever wanted to conduct your own down-and-dirty grant search without spending a great deal of time or money? Not an elaborate search-just a quick look to see if any funds might exist for your organization or a new program you are developing. If so, pop over to the Search Big Data! web site at: http://amity.igc.org:8080/dced/

Search Big Data! will not identify as many foundations as a search through "The Foundation Directory," but it will give you an idea if funds exist for your program. It is a good place to start and you can always conduct a full search later.
