Over the years, I’ve noticed several characteristics of organizations that have been successful with federal grants: (1) they were operating for at least five years. (2) clearly articulated visions, missions, and purposes. (3) a leadership team with experience securing and managing non-federal grants. Having people experienced with non-federal grants makes the transition to federal grants a little easier. (4) an active and engaged board of directors. (5) written policies and procedures. (6) a reliable and accurate accounting system and internal controls. (7) active partnerships with other organizations.
