Be ready to get started on short notice. 30-day application windows are becoming the norm. Federal regulations recommend agencies provide organizations 60 days to submit their applications but, at the very least, no less than 30 days. A few departments that consistently provided 60 days have been shrinking that window. Now, it seems 40-45 days is the average but 30 days is increasingly frequent. If you’re developing a new program from scratch and preparing a federal application, 30 days is a tight schedule—and that assumes you find the grant on the day it’s announced. Always have a few plans roughed out on the whiteboard so you’re not starting from square one when a grant becomes available.
