Private foundation grants are a tough nut to crack. Each one has its own unique set of requirements and rules. If you get turned down by one, keep trying or move on to others. The thing about foundations is you need to establish a relationship with them over time. They’re not like the government where you can submit a proposal and get funded with no prior relationship. You need to get to know the foundation and the staff—and they need to get to know you. It a more personal experience. It’s frustrating as hell to break through the first time but stick with it. If your plan is to go after private foundation grants, think long-term and think relationship building.
