For those new to federal grants, let’s talk about staff capacity. It’s a good idea to assign one person in your organization to be the lead on all things federal grants and get them trained up. If you already have private grants or state grants, make sure this person is high enough on the organizational chart to be familiar with how the other funds are managed so she or he can spot differences between your current procedures and federal requirements. Federal grants have a unique set of rules and you might need to tweak your policies and procedures a little to get on the same page as the federal government. Having one person oversee this will help streamline the process.
