Maitland rejects $200K federal grant for park renovations

December 15, 2020

Maitland City Council members rejected a $200,000 federal grant Monday that would have helped pay for nearly $1 million in improvements to Fort Maitland Park.

In a 4-1 vote, council members decided not to take a grant from the Land and Water Conservation Fund, federal money doled out by the state Department of Environmental Protection to eligible local governments for public outdoor recreation areas.

The city was approved for the grant in 2017 for plans to renovate the three-acre park with the only municipal boat ramp on Lake Maitland.

To accept the grant, the city needed to match at least half of the funds, permanently designate the land as an outdoor recreation site that’s not limited to Maitland residents and maintain the property in good condition for 25 years before removing or changing any facilities.
