Register your organization with the System for Award Management and Grants.gov early on in the process. You need to be registered with both of them before you can submit a federal grant application. If you wait until the last minute to register, you’ll be in bad shape. Sometimes, the process can take two weeks or more. It’s not like registering with an online store where you pick a user ID and password and off you go. There are several moving parts in the process—including submitting a notarized letter appointing your administrator—anything could trip you up. Even if you don’t plan on applying for federal grants for a while, it doesn’t hurt to register with SAM and Grants.gov. Get everything out of the way and you’ll ready to roll when the time comes.
