Limit the use of industry lingo in your grant proposals. All of us in our various professions tend to pick up phrases, language, terms and jargon that are very specific to our fields—to outsiders, it sounds like a foreign language. As you’re writing, try to avoid, or at least minimize, the use of industry phrases that might confuse or frustrate reviewers. And be sure to explain all acronyms. Don’t assume reviewers understand everything you put on paper. Spell things out for them.
