Case studies are a great way to learn. And when it comes to managing federal grants, the Internet is full of them. Go to Google News or Bing News and search on the following phrases: “federal grant audit,” “federal grant mismanagement,” “federal grant lost” and “federal grant misspent.” You can see where I’m going with this; experiment with other phrases too. You’ll be surprised how many news stories pop up documenting misspent grant funds; or stolen funds; or grants that need to be returned to the feds because of audit findings. If you want to improve your own grant management skills, learn from someone else’s mistakes. It’s a cheap education.
