In terms of federal grants, organizations do a poor job of planning ahead for future funding. Organizations should have a top five or a top ten list of programs they would start—or expand—if federal funding becomes available. So much time is wasted deciding what to do, selecting the project leader, designing the program, identifying external partners, securing matching funds, etc. When you have 30-60 days to apply, time is at a premium. Don’t waste it. Program managers, department heads, directors—everyone up and down the food chain—should be continually brainstorming. Carve out some time every week—maybe after work over drinks or appetizers—to kick around ideas and make plans. When funding opens up, you’ll be ready to roll.
