$500,000 federal grant to hire school resource officers in Reading will help build community relations, chief says

The Reading police chief said Thursday that a $500,000 federal grant to hire school resource officers will also help connect the department and the community.

The award is through the U.S. Department of Justice’s Community Oriented Policing Services Hiring Program. 

“We were very happy to find out that we received the funds,” said Chief Richard Tornielli. “For us to get the support of the U.S. Department of Justice to fund these positions, which are hugely important for the police department, city and school district, it can’t be understated.”
