If there’s one expression I could erase from grant-seekers’ vocabulary, it would be “free money.” Free implies no effort. Free implies no obligation. Free implies no accountability. Federal grants (hell, all grants) are a lot of work to find, to acquire and to manage. Just getting an organization to a place where it can effectively compete for grants involves a great deal of time and energy. And, if you expose your organization to repaying a federal grant because you mismanaged it, you’ll find out that “free money” is really damn expensive.
